personal philosophy
I want to read your personal philosophies, writ small. send me a line or two.
from Marcus Aurelius, Meditations:
14. As a part, you inhere in the Whole. You will vanish into that which gave you birth; or rather, you will be transmuted once more into the creative Reason of the universe.
17. Live not as though there were a thousand years ahead of you. Fate is at your elbow; make yourself good...

Do monsters bring material form to our feelings of vulnerability?
givemesomethingtoread:
Monsters are on the rise. People can’t seem to get enough of vampires lately, and zombies have a new lease on life. …The reasons for this increased monster culture are hard to pin down.
Simulmedia
zachklein:
I recently learned about a fascinating data-driven company called Simulmedia. They buy raw data from set-top box companies like Tivo and analyze it. Among many other things, they learn when a user watched what and and for how long. With a set of millions of users, they identify viewing patterns and can predict with certainty how receptive you might be to one television program given...

Here’s the whole album. It’s like the dreams sea monsters must have.
The Perfect Burger
So, I’m pretty much on a continual search for the perfect burger. I dream of the day when I will find the ideal blend of meat, toppings, and bun — the combination that will supersede all other possible worldly combinations. You're clearly winning when you wake up first
Or at least, that’s how it feels. I’m on my way to DC, via a one-day stop in NY (perhaps a little later than expected: my bus leaves at 6:30 AM and it’s 6:10 and I still have 8 stops to go). My backpack is abnormally light: I’m bringing one outfit.
Wake up before everyone else, and you’re clearly winning the day. I’m walking past establishments; learning...

Back of the Plane helps you find interesting people on your flights. I put this together with other Oliners over the weekend. Feel free to give it a spin - it’s going to get some more polish in the next few days.
Hot Diggity Dog
Damn, guys. That’s all I can say. After tumbling for well over a year now, the most popular picture I have ever posted is probably the link of myself dressed as a hot dog. Really? Is that all I am to you? Some silliness dressed up in a brightly colored overprocessed form of meat? A Hebrew National? A Frankfurter? A wienerschnitzel? You all should be ashamed of yourselves.
Next time,...
An Evening of Films about Food and Urban... →
I will be going to this tonight. Just let me know if you want to join.
It jives with the spirit of my latest literary purchase: The Rodale Herb Book: How to Use, Grow, and Buy Nature’s Miracle Plants. Only a book published in 1975 could tell me, in all seriousness, that “The Rodale Herb Book is … an enchanting guide to the herbal vista for the reader new to herbs. But it also...
