Isn’t it sick to romanticize mental institutions and the people who live inside them? But I must admit I do. From One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest_Ken Kesey to Opening Skinner’s Box_Lauren Slater to “Girl, Interrupted” I really do. These stories are just so human. At least, so I think. The inexplicable and unsharable torment of being inside yourself - I think that’s relatable to those of us who aren’t living in an institution. And as Goffman suggests in Asylums - we’re all institutionalized anyhow. Just in less overt ways than the people living between padded walls.
