Tonight’s ROFLThing was another fan-tizzle-tastic time. For pictures, check my flickr by clicking on the pic. The events of the night were as follows:
1. Andy Baio waxes on about the unwilling celebrity of poor Star Wars Kid - I never knew that he was so traumatized by the teasing that he had to drop out of school! Baio’s talk was pretty brilliant - particlarly notable was when he offered up the entire data set of Star Wars Kid video viewing statistics to anyone who wanted it.
2. Ben Huh, aka ‘Cheez’ of I Can Has Cheezeburger (grand propagator of the LOLcats phenomenon), lays down the how and why of microhumor as he sees it - the little bits of humor that we share on a daily basis, versus big network comedies and the like. I met with Cheez at ROFLCON back in April, and he was and remains a funny funny guy.
3. Sean O’Steen speaks on the Twitter phenomenon, the fail whale. The talk, with a letter from the fail whale himself, was about as cute as the whale. To be honest, though, I mostly tuned out for this one.
4. Fred Turner spoke on the countercultural influence of Buckminster Fuller and the communalists in the ’60s. Not only was he speaking on a celebrity intellectual, he became a bit of one after his well-formed, important and incredibly fertile talk. People crowded the area around where he was sitting on the edge of the stage, waiting to ask him more questions and tell him how they related to his ideas — which included a paper on how Burning Man influenced Google.
5. Interviewed a few people - but not as many as I hoped to (yet). [no pic]
6. Got kicked out of The Mighty, which inspired vitriol (especially from Scott Beale of Laughing Squid, who says they’ve pulled this double-booking a venue shit before) along with the rest of the crowd amidst getting down. When I mentioned I was hungry, a fellow Korean named MJ thrust leftover Chinese food at me, and let me tell you - it was the BEST honey walnut prawns I have ever tasted. Not to mention that was the kind of Chinese food that I could never eat with my parents around for all the friedness.
7. Ended up driving on … 82? Drove a touch frantically around Lake Merced area, then back up to Sunset district where we hung out with others, including Dino Ignacio (creator of Bert is Evil who now works with EA), who is a super nice (and stylish!) man.
