The Unabomber’s cabin, sitting in an FBI storage facility on an airforce base in Sacramento, photographed by Richard Barnes. Sure looks out of its element; as Barnes says, “the cabin represents a particularly American ideal of rural self sufficiency and independence gone horribly awry”, and its context is sort of the opposite of that. I wonder if it still sits there, waiting.

What’s more, could you imagine a minute replica of Ted Kazcynski’s Eliot House dorm room lodged inside this one? In ‘03, Alston Chase published a very engaging account of how the psychology experiments that Henry Murray performed on Harvard College students, including Kazcynski, eventually led to his turn toward radically destructive behavior. Here’s an article, part of a four part series, that he wrote for Atlantic Monthly in 2000, which preceded his book Harvard and the Unabomber: The Education of an American Terrorist.
