Jesse, a tutor in Mather, and I hosted the first Mather coffeehouse of the year yesterday night. The acts were wonderful: Caitria, a sophomore, is really talented, with a clarity to her voice that reminds me of a steadier Regina Spektor. Devon played and sang a hilarious song about procrastinating by playing Super Smash Bros, Anton did an endearing and funny poetry reading, and Rebekah played violin - and also brought her homemade coffeecake for everyone.
Meanwhile, Jesse ran a tight ship with the little Sunday night apocathary of teas and coffee we served, including white chocolate chai, kukicha Japanese green, rose, and mango green… it was a space to savor, and relax, and I’m happy about it. I am becoming a bit of a tea fanatic, but that’s a whole other story (Jue and I got the teas from TeaZone near Porter, which is a hole-in-the-wall haven for tons of teas contained in glass jars).
We’re hoping to do these coffeehouses every two weeks - so if you know someone who would like to perform, let us know. I feel as if many people at Harvard may have been brilliant performers in high school but no longer have a manageable, small-scale way to share their talents with a receptive crowd. Perhaps these coffeehouses could be one good avenue for their expression.
